u14s Girls v Northamptonshire Titans

u14s Girls v Titans

History was made at Gateway College last Saturday, when Leicester Warriors U14 girls took to the court for their first ever National League match against the formidable Northants Titans. The girls resplendent in a new orange kit, were the culmination of many weeks of hard work under the watchful eye of coach Reuben Walker.

The first quarter was punctuated by nerves & no real rhythm was established by the hosts, this was capitalised on by the Titans who immediately went on an 8 – 0 run. A time-out was called & on restart it was Nia who opened the scoring with a trademark drive & lay-up. Back came the Titans using their height & hustle to win the offensive boards. Warriors responded with a deuce from Lois & a tidy put away from Jenna, before Josie converted one from two from the charity stripe. The first was inked in favour of the visitors by 12 points to 7.

Momentum with them, Northants poured in 18 points during a frenetic second quarter. Warriors kept their heads up & continued to play through the onslaught. Their determination was rewarded with a strong drive & bucket from Josie. Again, the quarter closed with the Titans heading to the locker room ahead by 30 points to just 9.

Whatever was said at the half by coach Walker worked, as a more fluent & joined up passage of play energised the opening stanza of the third period. Sadie this time opened her account with a mid range jumper & then a put back for 4 quick points. A fast break was finished by Josie & another by Jenna, who made the hoop whilst nearly underneath it. Lois added one from two following a foul and Warriors girls had delivered 9 points to the Titans 12. The quarter finished 18 to 42 to the visitors.

Coach Walker used the fourth to give all of the team minutes & valuable experience. Lois again began to make inroads with 4 points & Neve wrapped things up with a neat finish in the dying minutes. Titans took the spoils by 60 points to 24 at the close.

There were many positives on the day, the girls keeping their heads despite the experience & size of their opponents. They showed in the third quarter that they could match the intensity required & surely will have easier afternoons than this as their league campaign develops.
