u14s Girls v Northants Lightning

u14s Girls v Lightning

After last weeks win the girls were brought down to earth with a bump, playing away at table topping Northants Lightening.

The first quarter was punctuated with unnecessary turnovers prompted by the hosts full court press. At the defensive end lack of organisation & shape gave up easy buckets & Warriors found themselves both in early foul trouble & down by a margin of 21 points to 5 after the first ten minutes. Sadie opened the scoring, with a banked “put back”, Josie added a bucket, but failed to make the “and1” & Lois made one from two from the charity stripe.

The second was closed in similar fashion, with Lightening continuing to take the initiative. The Warriors offence improved, but again turnovers & fouls proved costly. Charlotte struck twice following her introduction with two tidy jump shots, Lois drained a 3 ball & made 2 free throws, whilst Josie drove through the lanes for two quick lay-ups. Jenna completed the scoring with a bucket of her own, but the lead had stretched to 55 to 18.

After the break & with a more confidence Warriors began to build a little momentum. Josie continued with her drives delivering a thrice of scores, Nia opened her account with a steal & lay-up & Jenna & Lois added a hoop apiece. The score had moved to a more respectable 78 to 31 after 3 quarters.

The final quarter saw more easy scores from Northants, as static offence, lack of options & cuts during “5 out” saw the Warriors descend into one dimensional drives. Lightening capitalised on the situation and “counter punch” their way to victory. Coach Shakespeare used the last five minutes to give her whole rotation some minutes , at this point & in the dying embers of the game Coach Walker set the target as more than 45 points for the Warriors & to hold Northants to below 100 points, with a visit to the Golden Arches as a reward. This incentive worked, as the game closed out by 94 points to 46. Lois scored eleven points in the last stanza whilst two further scores for Jenna & Josie completed the game. Lightening ran out worthy winners & underlined why the currently sit on top of the league.

Scorers: Lois 19 Josie 12 Jenna 6 Charlotte 4
