u14s Girls Friendly v Sheffield Hatters
- Updated: 7th September 2014
Leicester Warriors girls travelled to Sheffield Hatters for their second friendly of the pre-season on Saturday 6th September 2014. This was always going to be a tough outing, as the core of this steam have been together for a number of seasons and won the Nationals last year.
The first quarter was frenetic, with the Hatters rushing out to a 10-0 lead behind solid rebounding & fast-break offence. The Warriors steadied behind 6 quick points from Neve & a put back from Evie, they finished the quarter down 16-8.
In to the second, with the Hatters coming out with their strongest five. Nia responded with a lay-up and Sadie drained a long jumper, Katie registered the only other points, with a well taken bucket, but the pressure told and the half -time came with a deficit to the Warriors 34 to 14.
The third quarter started with more Hatters pressure & this saw them push the lead out to 41-16. Nia scored a lay-up whilst Sadie was 1 from 2 from the line and then a banked three pointer. Evie hit another great basket and Neve drained a deuce following some good approach work. The quarter finished 50 to 25 in favour of the hosts.
The final quarter saw the Warriors dig deep on the defensive end holding Sheffield to just 5 baskets. However, they failed to score themselves & the game closed out 60 to 25
There were many positives today, with just 8 girls taking on the full Hatters squad. They played good team ball & grew with confidence throughout the game. They managed to score 25 points against a team who are used to brushing their opponents aside, whilst encountering some decidedly hometown refereeing. Overall their defence was excellent with everyone giving their best.
