u14s Girls beat Leicester Riders
- Updated: 7th November 2014
After last weekends bitter disappointment away to City of Birmingham, the Warriors Girls were still looking for their first win of the campaign. The added relish of a local derby provided the perfect back drop for today’s game on 25th October 2014.
Coach Walker wanted press, hustle, determination & focus in his team talk & the first quarter delivered just that, following an initially tentative start, it was Lois who took the bull by the horns with trademark drives to open the scoring with 9 first quarter points, this was going to set the tone for the game, which saw the visitors unable to live with the intensity of their hosts. Sadie added a long jump shot from the elbow, whilst Nia ran through the Rider’s defence to bag a bucket for herself. The quarter ended 13 to 4 in favour of the Warriors.
The second quarter was taken by 18 points to 12 by the Warriors, closing out the half by 31 points to just 16. Lois again opened the scoring with three more unimpeded drives, whilst Sadie hit four from four from the charity stripe & added another deuce inside the paint. Charlotte & Anna opened their accounts with a brace of well executed scores, whilst Charlotte converted one from two following a fast-break of her own. There was a confidence flowing through the team, which manifested itself in the best quarter of the season, which came straight after the half-time break.
The third quarter saw even greater intensity at both the offensive a defensive end. The visitors looked leaden footed by comparison & could only manage seven points across the quarter. The Warriors pressed, harried & carried their momentum to a 25 point haul. Lois again looked imperious with 12 more points & two great assists for Sadie in transition. Nia turned confident approach play & quick hands into two further buckets. Jenna also got into the action with a nicely taken bucket of her own. The lead was pushed out to an unsaleable 56 to 23 in favour of the Warriors.
The fourth quarter allowed Coach Walker to use his whole roster, giving everyone valuable minutes & experience. The opening stanza saw the starting 5 again helping themselves to more free scores. Lois, Nia & Sadie registered on the scoresheet before Neve added one hoop from the charity stripe . The Riders took the opportunity of subbing in their starting five again, once our bench came on, this gave them some freedom & the score a degree more respectability, though there was little they could do to stop the Warriors running out deserved winners by 67 points to 38.
Scorers: Lois 32 Sadie 16 Nia 10
